The staff were/are absolutely delightful, charming, helpful and superb in every way. The rooms were faultless and the beds incredibly comfortable. I really think the basic breakfast should be included in the price. Fewer chips at dinner and maybe a pasta dish could be a good addition to the menu.

Location and facilities all great and especially welcome because we booked on the spot due to high winds making our plan A camping a bit less attractive. Best of all though the excellent, friendly and helpful staff.
Tips:The breakfast basket option is actually great value because you can also make a really good packed lunch from it. Lots of local produce made it even better.

Really lovely Hotel in incredibly beautiful location. The owner was super friendly and welcoming, our room Number 1 was perfect in every way. Very comfortable bed with luxury bed linen and duvet, toiletries and bathroom so nice. I highly recommend this small country hotel with every modern amenity you would want. The simple breakfast was also great and so well laid out for us. 5 stars, our favourite hotel of the week!
Tips:Went to the very cute shop selling candles and woollens, very nice. We missed visiting Castle Druart which was very bad planning on our part as we had to catch ferry.

We arrived on Sunday and left the following Saturday, during this time Fiona, Sarah, Emma and Chris could not have made us feel more welcome. Nothing was to much trouble. The INN is situated on the side of a beautiful loch with sun sets to die for. Our room was extremely comfortable and serviced daily to a high standard. We dined at the INN each evening, the food was excellent (thanks Chris). Their attention to detail is second to none, the help given to us to ensure our days were filled with places to visit and wildlife to see truly made our holiday. Thank you
Tips:The INN has a wonderful amount of visitors, very helpful locals and is dog friendly. MULL and it’s Residents deserve 100% respect, the wildlife, views, walks and beaches are truly magical. One piece of advice don’t try and do it all at once, or too fast enjoy every minute of your adventure.

Such a great place for excellent service, we had lunch somewhere else on the island. So, we just ordered dessert and it was delicious. Fiona, Teri and Joanne are great floor staff, with the amazing Chris in the kitchen. Room was very clean and comfortable. When I return, I’ll make a point of sampling the menu.
Tips:The inn is on the banks of Loch Scridain, probably the largest Loch on Mull, its also on the main road and you can leave your car there and flag the local bus down and either head to Fionnphort or Tobermory. You can watch the wildlife from the shore, walk over the old bridge (1836] and see the village and maybe sight an otter or a seal.

We found the Inn at Port Nan Gael the ideal place for exploring the island of Mull. The team are all friendly, chatty and helpful. Our room was warm and cosy with stunning view across Loch Scridain. We loved the breakfast basket option as it kept is supplied with enough food during the day while we travelled the island (cafes and restaurants are comparatively rare). We recommend the locally sourced fresh mussels on the dinner menu at the Inn - delicious!
Tips:The Inn is in a perfect location for exploring the wilder side of the island. We saw golden eagles and some seals just along the roadside from the hotel. Iona is along the road just at the end of the Loch. We visited the nearby Ardalanish Weaving Mill which was fascinating. The team there are so enthusiastic about their traditional, yet industrial scale, weaving operation. We couldn't resist buying one of their woollen blankets - a fab souvenir from Mull.

We were very impressed with your inn, particularly your staff whose kindness made our stay very special. What a magical little place. The lodgings are fairly simple (room in the hotel, didn’t see the cottages), but have exactly what’s needed! Comfy bed, TV, tea/coffee/hot choc station, good shower etc. But the view, the bar and the staff are outstanding! The staff were so lovely and went above and beyond for us! We sat outside or in the bar looking at the beautiful view of the Loch for breakfast, dinner & beers and the bar is so beautifully and thoughtfully decorated. The foods amazing as well! Can’t recommend this place highly enough! Thank you for an amazing stay!
Tips:We focused on heading to Iona for the day. I recommend giving yourself more time than you think on the island as there’s a lot to see!

We were made very welcome on our arrival. Our room was clean and comfortable with a glorious view of Loch Scridian. We had all our evening meals in the restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed them. The breakfast baskets were great and even kept us going during the day. The hotel staff were excellent and very helpful. Our only regret was that we couldn't stay longer. Thank you very much for making or stay so enjoyable.

We enjoyed a great stay at the Inn at Port Nan Gael in May 2023. Our room (#5) was clean, large and very confortable. Fiona and her colleagues made us feel most welcome throughout our stay. Dinners at the Inn were excellent and very convenient after long days of exploring.
Tips:The Inn at Port nan Gael is very well located on the Isle of Mull. It is easy to reach Fionnphort and the ferry to Iona or the Staffa excursion tours. It is a great ride to reach Tobermory. Duart Castle is not too far. The surroundings and vistas are just fabulous.

Friendly service, very good food, clean and comfortable facilities. I will definitely hope to visit again and will recommend you to others
Tips:This depends on your interests and fitness. Days out include Iona, Calgary, Tobermory and points along the coast. There are also ferries to other islands including Staffa And that's just for less mobile individuals. There's also Ben Gorm and other mountains to climb and lots of scope for water based activities. We had excellent lunches at the Argyle Hotel on Iona and in Calgary. The Coffee Pot in Salen is excellent for take away lunches and cakes, cakes, cakes!

I actually booked Pennyghael Hotel out of desperation; hadn't realised the Mull Car Rally was happening at the end of our few days on Mull, severely limiting availability--but weeks of research and planning couldn't have found us anywhere better. Location is fantastic, on the shore of Loch Scridain; accommodation supremely comfortable; Fiona and her chef Fabian (sp? sorry) make sure that their guests have everything they need. Fiona seems to intuit what you want almost before you ask for it. All the food is excellent, but have to single out the chips--best we've had in the UK: thick cut, but crispy on the the outside, meltingly soft on the inside. I wouldn't want to stay anywhere else on Mull.
Tips:Book a guided wildlife tour with naturescotland.com. Book a boat trip out to Staffa. Don't bother looking for anywhere to eat other than at Pennyghael Hotel; food and catering to guests' needs are that good.

Beautiful tiny hotel in a beautiful location with very friendly and kind owners who helped us a lot with planning our trip to Iona! The beds are comfy and the bathroom is spaceful and with a huge skylight. The rooms are very clean and the food tasty!
Tips:One tip we got from the owners was to visit the isle of iona which is a beautiful island and definitely worth a day trip! Another tip would be: download an offline map app and google important things (like bus schedules) before you leave the Craignure Port, because there is nearly no mobile phone service at all on the western part of the island!

11th August 2022:
Fabulous stay in this lovely family hotel overlooking the sea loch at Pennyghael. We had a beautiful room, large and comfortable with an outstanding view over the loch. Great storage and attractive seating area next to window. The bathroom was modern and well organised although the hit water on the shower coukd be a bit intermittent. The owners run everything and provide all the services and this is obvious from the high standards maintained and the friendly attention and interaction. All food has to be booked and detailed the day before which is unusual but works well as the food is freshly cooked and served promptly. The breakfast was very tasty with choice of Scottish breakfast or delicious mull smoked salmon with perfectly cooked scrambled eggs. We chose fish 2 nights and enjoyed the salmon as well as the traditional haddock. The venison stew was also very tender. The vegetables are simply steamed and healthy. Delicious puddings. The hotel has a lovely garden and outside terrace. The hosts were friendly, and attentive. The perfect retreat in this beautiful island and well placed for visiting and exploring.
Tips:Fantastic location if you love wild life, snd hill walking. Numerous fabulous walks up Ben More and adjoining Moutan’s around the Great Glen. Very limited paths ir way marking though..we had no car so had to do a fair bit of road walking before the hill walks which was not so enjoyable with the heavy traffic. The track/Road to Carsaig was lovely as very little traffic through beautiful woods, then moorland before dropping down to the spectacular bay and cliffs of Carsaig. Stunning! We also took a wildlife guided day with wild about mull. The guide Bryan is very knowledgable geordie who helped us find and track otters on the loch, then eagles: golden and white tailed as well as red deer and seals! The use of his telescope was fantastic. However his manner is a bit unfortunate. Rather brusque and rude, barking questions at us. A huge pity as he clearly knows a lot and loves the natural world. Maybe a bit burnt out after 16 years. The packed lunch was also a bit meagre just a roll, crisps, biscuits and tea which we were told to serve ourself. However, definitely the perfect area to head out with binoculars to spot wildlife.

Had a lovely stay at the Pennyghael Hotel. The location is right on the Loch and fabulous views. We were 25 minutes away from the Iona Ferry and 35 minutes away from Craignure. We were also in a good position to explore the west coast including Calgery Bay and the isle of Ulva. It would have been easy for us to then drive up to Tobermory - (we didn't because we sought out quieter spots). The hotel itself was lovely. The rooms were a really good size and very comfortable and clean and looked newly refurbished. The staff were very friendly and helpful when it came to planning our trip/advice and help booking boat trip. Food was delicious and well presented. Lovely stay - thank you!
Tips:There is a petrol station enroute to the Iona ferry - really helpful chap there who helped us with a problem with our tyre. There are no other restaurants in Pennyghael, but the hotel restaurant has a varied menu. There is a small shop in Pennyghael. I would definitely take a trip via the scenic route up the west coast. You can see this road from the dining room in the hotel. We wanted to discover MacKinnon's Cave and found a small car park at a farm where there was a map to the cave. We also stopped at the church at Kilninnion and took a walk from there before going up to Calgary Bay. Lovely part of the country.

A absolutely stunningly beautiful place to stay.
Tips:The Isle of Mull is wonderfully untouched and unspoilt by human habitation and there just aren’t many cafes or restaurants outside of the major towns, which is the island’s charm. This is especially so during the pandemic. Visitors should plan ahead and be self sufficient when travelling out and about.

Treated really well by caring staff -who did everything possible to make our stay wonderful. Went the extra mile- great guidance re places to visit and wildlife on island.comfortable beds in well thought out rooms - views amazing.
Tips:Due to COVID-19 pandemic many restaurants and hotels shut, we booked our evening meals at Pennyghael and were not disappointed! Food was really nice, restaurant comfy and not crowded. We took a packed lunch with us from the hotel and that too was really fresh and tasty. It’s a good location for seeing different parts of the island. Views from house amazing and we were even blessed with warm weather. Only downside is midgies however theses can be managed with insect repellent- we didn’t get any bites.

Way more personal touches than we expected in hotel accomodation. More like staying with family. Warm greeting received. Bird feeders to attract birds. Duck family visit during day and go home at night after their dinner. Attention to detail in decor throughout the rooms. Friendly staff who got to know our preferences. Beautiful location and views. Delicious meals where chef is available to chat if desired. As you can guess, this hotel was a pleasant surprise!
Tips:There is a post office nearby that serves coffee and snacks with a lovely view. Pennyghael is pretty central on the Isle allowing you to drive around in a day if desired. Hotel at Bunessan nearby serves meals and you can catch a boat cruise from Fionnphort. Don’t forget a drive to the colourful town of Tobermory.

It would nice to have a light-hearted welcome provided by Joy and Paul. The room we stayed in had splendid views over the side garden over the loch to the mountain beyond. A highlight was to be able to watch an otter on the shore one evening from our room. We enjoyed both breakfasts and evening meals cooked to perfection by Tony and we were always looked after whenever we needed anything or asked for advice to see wildlife. Shame about the signal outage meaning no telecommunications for a couple of days not through any fault of the hotel but staff worked round the problem as best as they could. We will definitely come back again next year.
Tips:If you want to see the wildlife on the island then this hotel will be hard to beat. Birding organisations use this place to stay regularly. Otters are regularly seen on the shoreline outside for instance. There are no restaurants in the locality, so unless you want to choose to eat in the northern part of the island like in Salen or Tobermory, I would suggest this hotel will be your best bet for an evening meal although there isn't a huge choice and you will struggle to find something different to eat if you are staying a whole week. There's only 4 channels to watch on TV and internet signal is not the best and limited to 500mb.

Tips:If you have a car you will have no problem getting to see what is around. On foot very few buses. From Fionnphort Ferry the last bus is 15.15pm which limits choice where to eat and some tours return to the ferry after the last bus has gone. Same if you take two buses to get to Tombermory. Last one back to catch the last bus from Craignure ferry is 16.50pm. The hotel has an amazing view, lovely rooms, great breakfasts and evening meals with lots of choice. Nice to see local ingredients being used where possible. The location of this hotel is superb and makes an ideal base to explore Mull. We look forward to returning in the future.

Wonderful location though not for those who like to visits lots of bars and eat at a different location each night. Good food and accommodation. If we go back to Mull we would certainly stay here again.
Tips:Go to Iona and Castle Duart. The scenic route to Tobermory is well worth the trip but the driver may not see too much. Tobermory itself was a little disappointing and some shops looked tired. Try the Coffee Pot in Salem on the way. Finally if you are aiming for a sail to Staffa take the first chance. The swells result in trips being cancelled and landing impossible.

Very comfortable bed, large room, excellent views over the loch. Good breakfast and dinner, friendly and helpful staff.
Tips:Excellent location to explore the Ross of Mull, close to Carsaig (famous for the Arches) and on the road to Fionnphort and Iona. Anywhere on Mull can be reached in an hour or so, though, so it's just an amazing location. Not many shops or restaurants nearby (except the hotel restaurant) but larger villages like Bunessan are within a short drive.

Tips:Ask Paul where the amazing walk behind the waterfall is - highlight of our stay. Tobermory is pretty and the distillery interesting - we were lucky enough to go on a relatively quiet day so it wasn't heaving as its small and compact.

We had a fabulous stay at the Pennyghael, helped by 2 days of magnificent weather. We chose the hotel as a base for climbing Ben More, and it was bizarre that the hill was framed by our bedroom window - super view. Staff were friendly and extremely helpful, with some particularly useful information on the area from Mark. The food was excellent - huge breakfasts of high quality, and lovely evening meals - we stuck to fish and mussels which were delicious. Only one problem - we couldn't get the TV (which was tiny) to work, but as we weren't bothered, we didn't report it. I'm sure it would have been sorted immediately if we had.
Tips:There's really only the Pennyghael to eat and drink, but as the food and range of beers are so good, that is not a drawback. The hotel is a perfect base for climbing Ben More, which looks magnificent from the grounds (and bedroom windows). We spent our other day on Iona, again easily accessible from the hotel.

A great little family-run hotel, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Faultlessly run and Joy takes cleanliness to a whole new level! It is also well-situated, the views across the loch are stunning and it is a good place from which to explore in any direction. Or it will be once the bridge is repaired and you can drive directly to the North of the island. Not a good place if you're trying to lose weight however because the food is amazing!
Tips:Bryan Rains (Wild about Mull) is just down the road and is an excellent guide for birding and immensely knowledgeable. You don't need restaurants as the hotel food is so good. Handy for going to Iona and Staffa as the ferry is only half an hour down the road.

Tips:A great site for seeing otters from the dining room windows. The animals are frequently seen in the kelp beds on the shoreline of the loch. The restaurant menu has improved and much greater choice is available. Only a short drive (about 15 miles) to the ferry for Iona, a must-see destination.

We enjoyed our stay at Pennyghael and thought the staff were very patient with us, producing good food & very clean room, bathroom indeed. Couldn't fault it. WE had a few laughs and the staff had a good sense of humour which is important.
Tips:Carsaig walk was beautiful - little road to west of hotel. Be careful to note times of the Craignure- Fionphort bus as it stops at Pennyghael rarely and will dictate what you do, if you don't have a car. We were unlucky with the weather, so take jumpers if there's a wind expected. Delicous seafood stall at port to Iona. Book evening meal as there's nothing else near. Staff very amenable to special requests too. Must be difficult for them with shopping restricted on Mull.

Tony, Joy, Paul and Mark were so friendly and welcoming. The hotel's location - looking out to Loch Scridain and magnificent Ben More - is just stunning. My beautiful room with a view contained everything you could possibly need for a comfortable stay - lots of thoughtful touches - and was kept spotlessly clean throughout my stay. Generous breakfasts, served with a smile by Joy. The chef cooked lovely veggie dinners for me every evening of my stay, most of which were served impeccably by Mark, with the sort of service that you would expect from a top London restaurant! Will definitely be back next year!
Tips:Experience perfect peace in this tranquil spot, which is well away from the hustle and bustle of busier parts of the island, but still a perfect base from which to explore this part of Mull and beyond. Tiny but well-stocked shop and Post Office nearby, where you will receive a warm welcome from (another) Joy and adorable, smiley Claude! Joy's husband runs wildlife tours in his minibus. On our trip with him we were lucky enough to observe a group of juvenile white-tailed eagles eyeing an otter munching on a fish - so much going on we didn't know where to look! Lots of information at the hotel about things to do on the island, and they will book trips for you. I travelled to Mull by public transport and had no trouble getting around using buses - they stop right outside the hotel. I reached some less accessible locations by using the excellent Ulva Ferry Community minibus (see their website for how to book).

The owners were very hospitable and knowledgeable about the island and even offered to make us packed lunches if required. Looking out over the loch and mountains from the breakfast table every morning was a pleasure. A very enjoyable stay.

Immaculate, warm and welcoming hotel. Beautiful views from the restaurant/breakfast room. The comfy seats and bar area are relaxing after dinner. The staff are friendly without being intrusive and the food is beautifully and healthily cooked. Thanks for a lovely 3 night stay.
Tips:It is a short drive to the foot of Ben More which is an enjoyable climb. It is a short drive to reach the ferry to Iona for a day trip with beautiful beaches and good coffee (Iona Craft Shop had the best). A longer drive takes you to Tobermory if you crave an actual town - lovely harbour and walk to the lighthouse. Tobermory bakery has great coffee/cakes/lunches.

Very friendly and relaxed service, tasty food and great location. Beautiful views out onto the loch. The bedroom facilities and ensuite were spotless and very comfortable.
Tips:Only 30 minutes from ferries to Iona and the mainland and approximately 1 hour from Tobermory. Also handy for the scenic route and only 10 minutes drive from start of walk to Carsaig arches. There are pubs/restaurants in Bunessan, Craignure and Fionnphort but we ate in the hotel for all 3 nights of our stay as it was cosy and there was quite an extensive menu. Ample parking on site.

Such a comfortable, warm and friendly place. We loved Pennyghael. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the breakfasts and dinners a delight.
Tips:Iona is magic. The aisle of Mull also fantastic, but tricky road until you get used to it. Staffa would have been great but the weather prevented our trip. A fantastic place, impressive scenery and memorable experiences.

We had a warm welcome from our hosts Tony, Joy and Paul. A friendly atmosphere at the hotel with high standards and spotlessly clean. A tasty and well cooked 'full' breakfast was enjoyed each morning and also a good variety of cereal and fruit to hand if desired. Dinner was also enjoyed on several nights of our week long stay at the hotel. This 3 star Hotel has more to offer than some of the 4 and 5 star hotels we have stayed in.
Tips:Wildlife watching goes without saying to I expect most visitors to Mull. Iona is a must to visit and hopefully if we visit in the future a trip to Staffa will also be on the agenda. Tobermory was an enjoyable visit , it would have been good to have seen more shops open but as it was a Sunday maybe a day of rest was needed. Visit the Craignure Inn for a friendly welcome and atmosphere and good food.

We were very fortunate to be able to stay at such a welcoming hotel. Staff were friendly, breakfast was great as was the evening meal. There were no negatives about our stay. The rooms were comfortable and clean with bottled water, tea facilities and biscuits provided. Unfortunately, we had to leave before breakfast on the last morning, but packed lunches were kindly prepared for us. Thank you for a memorable stay and we hope to be back soon.
Tips:The Islan's wildlife is unbelievable as is the scenery. A trip to Staffa is a must (on a fine day) Take the scenic route and you ar bound to see the eagles ,deer and otters but you must keep you eyes peeled. We had a nice lunch at Bellachroy Hotel in Dervaig. Tobermoray is also worth a visit.

We had a lovely stay in this small hotel which has an idyllic location. We were made to feel very welcome and have no critical comments to make. Our room had a beautiful view and we had a very relaxing stay. The owners could not have been more helpful - breakfast and dinner very good and we have no hesitation in recommending the hotel.
Tips:Visit Iona and the rest of Mull if time allows.

Lovely place to stay and perfect base for exploring Mull. Joy, Tony and Paul are all very welcoming and helpful. The hotel is beautifully situated and very quiet. Our only regret is that, unlike many other guests, we failed to see an otter on the shoreline, but I'm hoping Joy will arrange that next time!

Best place we could have stayed on Mull. Great location, great hotel. The Ross of Mull is stunning and there's plenty to do without spending all day in the car.
Tips:If it's midge weather, head for Iona. The further west you go, the more likely you are to catch a breeze, which midges hate. Our Staffa boatman says Iona has no midges. We didn't go on a still day, but we believe him. Go for the early trip to Staffa. Less busy than the one after lunch.

Excellent, warm, well provisioned room. Breakfast really good. Being bird watchers, the bird feeders in the garden were the icing on the cake.
Tips:Ideally located for walks and wildlife watching. The local bus stops outside the hotel, although be sure to get a timetable beforehand, only 3/4 a day. By bus, 35 minutes to the Fionnphort/Iona ferry and 40 minutes to Craignure/Oban ferry.
