21st August 2022:
Jo and Dave were excellent hosts who clearly have the well-being of their guests as first priority. They are friendly, helpful with local information and good fun to be with. I can only give them the highest recommendation. For those not fit and without a car the location overlooking the harbour could be an issue. However, we enjoyed the walks up the steep paths, the reward being the stunning views of the harbour as you climbed to Bredalbane street.
Tips:We would recommend the Staffa Island wildlife tours and allocating a full day for the visit to Iona if travelling from Tobermory. We enjoyed excellent cuisine at The Galleon restaurant. If driving on the island be patient and aware that most of the roads are very narrow, requiring constant stopping to allow passing. There is an excellent 4km return walk to the lighthouse which you access via a path starting by the Kilchoan ferry terminal.

This hotel is wonderful. The bed is big and comfortable. The room and bathroom are spotless. The bathroom has every accoutrement you would ever need. Really enjoyed our stay. Outstanding service from start to finish, a lovely room, and wonderful food. The evening meal was the best food we ate all week, many compliments to the chef. We highly recommend Highland Cottage to others.
Tips:The best day of the week was the Staffa Tours trip to Treshnish Isles and Staffa, absolutely the highlight of our year! The Crater Loch walk three miles from Tobermory is well worth a visit for beautiful views. We also recommend Calgary Beach and Iona Abbey (pre-book tickets). Avoid Western Isles Hotel for dinner, it looks excellent on paper, but in reality the service is poor, and the food barely mediocre. Spice of Mull is worth a visit if you enjoy Indian food.

Most welcoming, comfortable holiday establishment. Excellent service and superb breakfasts. Nothing seemed too much trouble for Jo and David. Would recommend Highland Corttage to any friend visiting Mull.
Tips:Aros Park, Glass Barn, Calgary bay and cafe and Glengorm castle and coffee shop well worth a visit. Iona and Boat trip to Staffa ( Fingals cave and puffins) very worthwhile. Wildlife outstanding especially golden eagles in Glen More, otters, white tailed sea eagles ( loch Frisa) whales and dolphins on boat trips.

I think for many yuppie millennials they’ll take a look at the branding and the website and think it’s not for them. But then they’ll go there and realise how authentic and intentional the place is setup and quickly get into it. This was someone’s dream and it is beautiful. The hosts are lovely and the rooms are delightful, don’t think about it, just do it!
Tips:Take the trip to Staffa if you’re good on your feet, it was a highlight for us.

25th September 2020:
Really quite the loveliest acoomodation, with charming hosts to match. Olde world charm with a four-poster bed, and our room, Staffa had great views towards the sea. The Scottish breakfasts were sensational! Lots of fresh locally-sourced ingredients cooked to perfection. Highest level of Covid19 measures in place.
Tips:Highland Cottage is set on the hill above Tobermory, and is a short, but steep walk down into the town. We ate at MacGochans in the evenings, with a good range of local seafood dishes. Open air balcony for eating with views of the harbour. We made two boat trips during our stay. One to Iona, and the other to Staffa to see Fingal's Cave. Enjoyed both but the Staffa trip was spectacular, with a stop-off allowing you to walk into the cave, and another landing on an area to view seals and their pups. All tourist activities seem to have the strictest Covid19 measures in place. If you have a car, it is also lovely to drive around the island and watch for nature. We spotted lots of sea eagles. Decent local maps available at the Book and Tackle shop in the town (worth a visit too!)

Lovely, cosy room with four poster bed. Every possible amenity provided from slippers to coffee machine to hi-tec alarm clock with USB, iPhone and iPad charging points! The food is outstanding. The evening menu is full of local produce along with a hand picked wine list that reflects David and Jo’s travels. Dinner is more like a private dinner party where guests chat and genuinely enjoy each other’s company. David and Jo are brilliant hosts who bring out the best in their visitors. So much more than a hotel/guesthouse, Highland Cottage is a unique accommodation experience I would thoroughly recommend.
Tips:Tobermory Distillery. Oliver the tour guide is so passionate about whisky. If you can guess his nationality you get a free dram! (Swiss)

We would recommend the full Scottish (vegetarian) breakfast as well as a very special dining experience with unexpected touches which made for a memorable birthday. Thank you! Highland Cottage is within easy walking distance from everything in Tobermory (a few inclines - all worth it).
Tips:The drive to Fionnphort to catch the ferry to Iona makes for a long day but is more than worth it. A walk up to Glengorm castle made for spectacular views of the north coast. Dave and Jo are excellent hosts and looked after us exceedingly well. The food - what can I say about Jo's cooking - just superb - do try the evening meal but make sure you are really hungry first!!! Rooms are traditional and cosy and some have wonderful views. Super location and the hosts are just lovely
Tips:The hotel is set up quite high so you need to be able to walk down (and back!) a steep hill or drive down to Tobermory where there is free parking. Goto the tourist caravan on the car park for information for all trips.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Our labrador was made very welcome. Excellent food fully deserving of your two AA rosettes and flexibility around the number of courses was much appreciated. Thanks for a great time.
Tips:The Tobermory Hotel was a good option for eating in the town - we enjoyed langoustines fresh from the boat, nice service and dog friendly.

Spotlessly clean and superb food. Exactly what we were hoping for on our Scottish holiday. I was really grateful for the time and effort Jo put in to adapting the menus for my low carb requirements, and the lift back down to the bus station with our cases at the end was an added and unexpected loveliness. Thank you.
Tips:The short walk to the lighthouse and along the coast the other way to Aros park are well worth doing. The museum on the Main Street was really interesting - so much information in quite a small area. The Mishnish pub with its hand pulled beer was a favourite with my husband.

Our hosts were very welcoming and helpful. The hotel is very comfortable; rooms are spacious and clean. The meals were tops. We were very happy to have stayed at Highland Cottage and look forward to our return.
Tips:Dave and Jo are very knowledgeable about what to see and do. We toured around a good part of the island by car, which I would strongly recommend. Take a boat trip to Lunga and Staffa. This is truly worthwhile. Walk along the waterside, and stop in for a tour at Tobermory distillery!

David and Jo proved to be extremely welcoming hosts. Our stay at Highland Cottage was enhanced its relaxed atmosphere, Jo’s delicious cooking and both David and Jo’s in-depth knowledge of Mull. In addition to their attention to detail, they were always ready to provide suggestions and directions to ensure we took full advantage of our stay. We also witnessed how attentive they were toward other guests, with David going so far as to provide transportation to a couple without a vehicle.

Our bed was comfortable but there were one or two lumps in the mattress; maybe it will need replacing soon? I loved Tobermory but only gave the location a 4 because the climb up to Breadalbane St was a bit daunting!
Tips:We had nice meals at the Galleon Grill and the pub on the quay (the name of which I have forgotten I'm afraid) but a pretty poor one at the Mishnish Hotel (Pete had belly pork which was ok but I had a risotto which bordered on the inedible) I loved the art and sculpture walk at Calgary and the boat trip to Staffa was pretty good too. The play by the Mull theatre was really good and made a really enjoyable evening's entertainment

Lovely weekend on Mull. Highland Cottage hotel was a treat - David and Jo the owners were brilliant hosts and the cooked breakfast was superb. Our room was spotless and the hotel in general was full of nice homely touches. Very highly recommended.
Tips:Didn't try the hotel for dinner but by all accounts it is excellent. Isle of Iona is worth a day trip - it was sunny and very lovely when we were there - maybe on a rainy day it would be less so. Calgary bay and arts centre also very nice and a good cup of coffee at the centre. Local curry house was alright - standard fair as was the Mishnish bar meal we had. My husband and I felt like this B&B was a home away from home and David and Jo felt like family. Both took wonderful care of us, David has a great sense of humour and his ability to make his guests feel comfortable and at home is always a priority to him. Jo is busy in the kitchen and all I can say is wow! We can quite honestly say we have never had such wonderful food on any of our many holidays nor indeed at home. Although busy preparing and cooking breakfast, Jo still found time to pop out to see how our day was going. We had the pleasure of dining in on one night with four of our close friends and dinner was simply delicious, honestly one of the best meals we have ever had. We all said the same, outstanding. We very much hope to come back next year.
Tips:If you enjoy walking, take short drive to Glengorm Castle. Walking amongst the sheep and highland cows was a delight and we took some fabulous photos. The views were simply breathtaking. Calgary beach was another highlight. Beautiful. We had pasta and pizza at The Mishnish and would recommend it. Fresh ingredients and perfectly cooked pasta. Pizza was a lovely thin crust with the perfect amount of toppings. Definitely worth stopping in for an enjoyable inexpensive meal with a good selection of beer and wine. My husband did the Distillery tour and raved about it. The tour guide had a great sense of humour as well as being knowledgeable about the history and art of Scotch making.

This small hotel offers a very good standard of accommodation, with little touches you would only expect in a 5 star hotel, such as bathrobes, slippers etc. The hosts David and Jo are absolutely brilliant and made us feel very welcome. David acts as the waiter whilst Jo is the chef and both are extremely good at there jobs. Whilst we didn't ave dinner during our stay (we were there over a weekend and dining room is closed on a Sunday) we did have the breakfast which had an extensive choice and was cooked to order by Jo and was absolutely perfect, which on reflection made us regret not having dinner on Saturday evening) David is an extremely genial and entertaining host, with a brilliant sense of dry humour. We would thoroughly recommend the Highland to anyone contemplating a visit to Tobermory.

This was a delightful cottage hotel with only 6 rooms. It was very homely and comfortable and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. Our room while quite small still had enough space to store all our gear and the bed was really comfortable so we slept well here. If you opt to eat at the hotel be prepared for a major, multi-course meal full of gourmet flavours and excellently cooked by Jo. We ran out of space and didn't make it to dessert! We found Jo and David to be excellent hosts with plenty of conversation and happy banter although David's dry wit might not suit all, we had great fun with it! This was a great spot to stay while exploring the island and we would definitely stay there again
Tips:Tobermory has a range of places to eat and we'd recommend Cafe Fish (very nice and make sure you book), The Galleon Grill and Mishnish in particular all on Main Street and walking distance from the hotel with a bit of a hill though. If you're happy to travel a bit, the Am Birlinn restaurant just beyond Dervaig on the north end towards Calgary is outstanding. Mull Eagle Watch was well worth it - the Dervaig site is closer to the hide so we got a good view of both adults and chicks on the nest A visit to Calgary Beach was lovely and on the south side Duart Castle was very interesting and scenic. There are lots of places to stop off and take a walk and we were lucky enough to see Golden Eagles, White Tailed Eagles and Peregrin falcons as well as numerous sea birds and an astonishing number of herons! We managed a quick view of otters but you really have to creep up on them as they hear you coming and swim away!

The location of the hotel is very good, being slightly away from the harbour; beautifully quiet and peaceful in a lovely little street - excellent sleep! Service is personal and friendly. David and Jo are clearly highly experienced and excellent at all they do. Our room was beautifully presented and clean. The facilities were very good; tea and coffee and a lovely wee jar of home made biscuits to go with it was a nice, unusual and welcome touch. We had dinner at the hotel on one night and this was a great experience - so glad we decided to do it! Not to be missed. Superb food, well prepared and well presented. The dining room is beautiful - totally in keeping with the 'Highland Cottage' theme but tastefully done. In all, a quality experience and well worth a visit.
Tips:Tobermory is a very small but very vibrant town, full of life and colour. A good range of choices for eating, for such a little place, if you're not eating in the hotel. The island of Mull is utterly beautiful, with beauty everywhere you look. Roads are narrow and very windy/hilly so be prepared to be a very patient driver. A leisurely pace and attitude will keep you feeling relaxed and happy. Lovely people! If you like the appeal of Scotland and the islands, you'll thoroughly enjoy Tobermory.

A terrific hotel with lovely rooms and great location. Hosts Dave and Jo were friendly and entertaining. We had an excellent dinner in the hotel and the breakfast the following morning set us up for the day. Would recommend for people looking to go to Mull to unwind, as there were plenty of books to read and two lounges to relax in.

Tips:Highland Cottage is perfectly perched just above the town with a short easy (albeit steep) walk access. For those who get sea sick easily, Staffa tours' catamaran style boat provided a relatively calm ride to see hundreds of Puffins. This is a trip you don't want to miss. David and Jo are amazing hosts. The meals are unbeatable, and they packed us a picnic lunch which was delicious, generous and full of surprises. Our room offered a pretty sea view and the walk to town was beautiful. Everyone in Mull is happy and smiling. I can see why, it is a piece of heaven. As for the Highland Cottage, well we look forward to returning. As my husband pointed out, it is hard to believe that a place as sweet and thoughtful as this still exists. An award winner.

David and Jo could not have been more accommodating. Very friendly and welcoming. Fantastic local knowledge. Breakfasts were a delight and dinner was lovely, superbly cooked and well presented.
Tips:Staffa tours boat trip was great for wildlife but wrap up warm; it got pretty chilly on the top deck even on a sunny July day. Calgary Bay was great for a paddle and a nice little arts centre nearby for tea and cakes. Iona was lovely.

Everything was perfect. Your warmth and friendliness made our stay with you one of the most welcoming places we stayed in the UK. Entirely professional, while maintaining a warm and chatty, informative atmosphere. Appreciated laundry service, especially as it was not charged.
Tips:Cafe Fish was excellent. trip to Iona and Staffa worthwhile despite 40knot winds - just a different experience to what we were expecting..... Enjoyed the whisky tour and our dinner at Highland cottages was a highlight.

An absolute jewel in the hospitality crown,-one of the most idyllic places to stay in Scotland (and we have stayed in many in the highlands and islands) Having had dinner there a few years ago while staying elsewhere on Mull, we always vowed to return one day. The friendly welcome and hospitality must be unrivalled, the accommodation providing all one would wish for, and the food! and breakfasts!-a gastronomic paradise.

The property is lovely, and extremely well maintained. Rooms lovely and tasteful, with nice extras like a jar of cookies and a couple of bottles of spring water. Breakfasts and dinners absolutely first rate, with an excellent range of options -- really, quite an extraordinary range of food options, given that the establishment has only six rooms. And everything was fresh and tasty. The proprietors -- David and Josephine -- were incredibly warm, helpful, and accommodating, including with extras like travel tips and laundry. They helped make every aspect of our stay a success.
Tips:We would recommend Highland Cottage without reservations. We were blessed with excellent weather but would, in any event, recommend the trip to Iona and the scenic driving route coming back. Josephine gave us very good guidance, and am confident she or David would advise what's best given the weather.

Our second visit to Highland Cottage and will not be the last! The welcome from David and Jo, the comfort of your surroundings, really excellent menu's. Our stay was three days and we enjoyed three wonderful dinners, fish, beef, venison all prepared with care and presented so well. Tried to be good but Jo's sweet dishes were truly irresistible.
Tips:Well so much and such good walking.Calgary Bay( lunch at the Calgary Art Centre), sitting watching the Loch Aline ferry and other boats from the picnic area at Fishnish in the morning sun was just so relaxing. Walk from Highland Cottage down into centre of Tobermory past the pier then head for the lighthouse,on the way back climb up through the ferns for fabulous view. Iona ,cannot visit Mull without going there.

David and Jo run a very comfortable and friendly hotel which is well located in Tobermory. The food is excellent and the accommodation is very comfortable and well maintained. A wide choice of breakfast options is available. Highly recommended.
Tips:We enjoyed wildlife trips with with Sealife Surveys, Discover Mull and Staffa Tours. Combined with local walks, this meant that we hardly used our car during the stay.

Dave and Jo couldn't have made me feel more welcome! What an exceptionally comfortable and quiet place. . .and the food ranks with the best I enjoyed in London. This is the place to stay in Tobermory!
Tips:Leave adequate time to drive to and from Craignure (the ferry port on Mull if you are coming from Oban). The roads are safe, but only one lane. That means you may be slightly delayed as you allow time for other cars to get by on the frequent turnouts.

Tips:Tobermory has much to offer but you'd be foolish to eat elsewhere and miss out on a fantastic experience!
