2nd February 2023:

Matt, Rachel and the wee man Hamish were fantastic hosts to our group stay at Achaban. They were really helpful with advice before our trip, and during our stay set up the fantastic hot tub for us. They had great local knowledge of places to go for walks, or places to visit. They were really friendly and made us feel very welcome, I absolutely would recommend them. The house itself is great, as a group of 14 we felt there was a good amount of space and we could comfortably sit in the lounge or at the dining table without feeling cramped. The kitchen is well equipped and likewise has good room, although we were cooking as a group which made things easier. Most of the bedrooms were ensuite too, so there were ample facilities for everyone. The hot tub is fantastic even in a cold damp January evening you can sit in it! After the first night it came up to temperature very quickly as well, and didn't need much effort to keep it going. We could fit 6 people in it quite easily.

Tips:

The Keel Row in Fionnphort is a must, fantastic local pub. It is well worth going off the beaten track in the summer and visiting some of the lesser known beaches. Keep your eyes peeled on the drive for otters too. For walkers, Ben More is great, as well as the other hills around. I would recommend good waterproof shoes AND gaiters as the 'path' is quite boggy. The shop in Fionnphort was well stocked, and amazingly the spar on Iona was incredibly well stocked, it even had vegan "cheese", oat milk, and tofu! However we did a tesco click+collect in Oban for the majority of our supplies. Keep in mind if you're travelling in Autumn/Winter a lot of places are closed from October-March, so your cafes etc. are more limited, however it is still well worth a visit and much quieter.

Thank you Matt and Rachel for a fabulous week. Achaban House was perfect for our group with 6 bedrooms, all with their own bathroom. Very high quality accommodation, spotlessly clean and a very attractive house. We really appreciated all your help and tips for things to do. The location right on the loch is stunning and it is great to be able to do so many lovely walks right from the door. The hot tub is a real treat and has an unbeatable view of the loch.

Tips:

The location of Achaban House is perfect. This end of Mull is so beautiful and you can walk along a lovely path on the loch into Fionnphort in about 10 minutes. We enjoyed being able to visit Iona so easily. Staffa is a must see island, so dramatic at Fingal's cave and we saw baby seals too. the Keel Row pub in Fionnphort is great, excellent food, nice cosy bar and great music all within walking distance. We also loved the Lazy Cow cafe which does excellent coffee and lunches and is also within easy walking distance. Our day out with Bryan from Wild About Mull was memorable - we managed to see sea and golden eagles, otters (including pups), mountain hares and much more.

29th September 2022:

The house is beautifully decorated, extremely well equipped and in a fabulous location. A lovely lochan is on the doorstep and from there you can walk into the hills where golden eagles circle and then to dreamy beaches where you can swim while watching ringed plovers and - with luck - otters. And at the end of the day there is a cosy sitting room which - unlike many large Scottish houses - is properly warm with an efficient log stove. It was a delightful stay, and Matt could not have been more helpful and knowledgable.

Tips:

Just go there.

10th July 2022:

My family thoroughly enjoyed every moment of our stay at Achaban House, in particular the kitchen with double cooker and the dining room large table setting where 14 of us could sit and eat comfortably as a group. It is a very peaceful location which negates any feelings of stress. Matt (the host) was very helpful with local advice on travel, eating places, history etc., and went the extra mile to ensure we had a memorable time. The location was a one minute drive from the house to grocery store/gift shop, cafe, take-away, pub (good atmosphere) and ferry port to Iona which takes ten minutes. There were various beaches nearby within fifteen minutes drive. Hot tub was a big plus and very popular. The Host's only failure was his inability to control the weather. This is something he needs to work on!

Tips:

The Creel Shack and cafe opposite were very helpful and offered to help when we ran out of milk one day. Would definitely consider supporting them, either for take-aways or for cuppa while waiting for ferry or returning from trip to Iona. We tried Columba Hotel, Argyll Hotel, and Martyrs Bay which were all clean and helpful. A visit to the Abbey should not be missed if visiting Iona.

Really enjoyed the stay in Achaban house. Very friendly owner and wife runs business. The location is really nice for the visit to Iona. Couldn't visit Tobermory and the west coast scenic route. May need to plan for a 1 week trip to cover the full Isle of Mull including Tobermory. Also kids enjoyed the hot tub provided in the property.

We were met at the door by Matt and Rachel who couldn’t have been more welcoming and told us all about the area places to walk and visit and wonderful beaches The accommodation is superb beautiful comfy cosy and spotless bedrooms with beautiful views and a lovely relaxing lounge to sit in the evening with log fires Nothing was to much trouble for this lovely couple and we will certainly be going back again

Tips:

Not many restaurants we had a superb meal at the local pub and the ninth wave restaurant is just down the road from Acaban but was closed at the time off our visit I would recommend that you take food with you has there is only one shop in the village and a spar about five miles away who sell most basic needs the kitchen has a large fridge and freezer so storage is not a problem Lots to do Birdwatching walking swimming ferry minutes away to Iona and Fingles cave

We were in Achaban House for 5 days as a family - absolutely brilliant time in a locality with endless interest and variety.

Tips:

Screel Fish and Chips in Fionnphort has local scallops and mussels in abundance. We could only book a late return CalMac(19.35) on the Saturday evening … but it is worth knowing that there is a 'standby queue' for earlier crossing and we managed to get on the 1.40pm ferry - which made all the difference to the long drive south.

Please thank “Edna” and her hen friends for their freshly laid eggs which along with your home made bread, made a delicious breakfast. Very much looking forward to returning hopefully with the family next year.

Achaban House is the perfect "getaway from it" stay. Comfortable, spacious bedrooms, lovely, well-equipped communal spaces including local art, cosy fires (useful even in the Scottish summer) and peaceful location with plenty of outside space and view over Loch Potee. Easy walking distance to Fionnphort, boat trips to Staffa and the ferry to Iona. Matt and Rachel perfect hosts, local knowledge, top-tips and there when you need them. We visited during Covid-19 restrictions and they couldn't have done more to make our stay more enjoyable. We loved it!

Tips:

Mull isn't huge but a travelling speed of 20mph on single track roads can make any trip longer than expected. We toured the North of the island in one day and enjoyed a restful stay in the South which has some of the most beautiful white beaches you will ever see. If you go to Ardalanish - Isle of Mull Weavers you can also pick up incredible lamb (and venison). Also love Staffa Trips for tour to this unique island and chance to see the puffins who make this their home from March to July.

Achaban is located in a beautiful position over looking a lake and within walking distance to Fionnphort and the ferry to Iona. The house is well decked out with everything you'll need for your stay whatever the weather. Matt and Rachel are excellent hosts with an extensive knowledge of the area, tips of where to go and what to do. That was our second stay and we'll be back again!

Tips:

Matt and Rachel have all the local knowledge of what to do, where to eat and where to source the fantastic local produce on offer including mussels, fresh veg, sea food (langoustines etc..) and local meat. There are plenty of great walks and beaches to visit in the neighborhood, if you like deserted white sandy beaches and clear water you are spoiled for choice.

Great property and lovely, helpful couple re local knowledge, walks etc. Weather duff but that was outside of their control! Something to think about but is it worth considering some bike/kayak hire options as there aren’t a lot of facilities locally?

Tips:

Lochbuie PO ready cook meals (Flora Campbell) are excellent and they have a cool box at the end of the Lochbuie road to aid pick ups. Order early if you want to order a takeaway meal from the Keel Bar. Meal planning requires some careful thought at the current time!

Achaban house is in a nice, wild location within easy walking distance to the Iona ferry. It is a comfortable large house with nice rooms. For us, the experience was marred a bit by a couple of things. First being told at the front door that we need to remove our shoes before coming in (including my 83 year Father) is outrageous in this day and age. Secondly, the breakfast arrangements are very poor. We knew that there were no cooked breakfasts and that we would help ourselves to cereals and toast. What we didn't know is that the hosts would be present. If they are there, then why don't they cook a proper breakfast? Also, we found them and the other guests very intrusive, asking all kinds of questions when we wanted a quiet breakfast. Not somewhere to go if you want a quiet time! They should provide a proper breakfast and somewhere quiet to eat for those who do not wish to be interrogated!

Achaban House is a perfect location for the foot ferry to Iona or tourist boat to Staffa and other islands - just a couple of minutes' drive from the guest house. Great food at the Keel Row Inn next to the ferry terminal - have a drink in the bar while you wait to be called to your table (small kitchen so they "stagger" the orders).

The breakfasts are great, plentiful, lots of variety and home baked bread. The self catering kitchen for guest use is a good idea in a remote area where evening meal opportunities can be restricted. I will be more than happy to return to Achaban House in the future.

Tips:

Iona. Leave the crowds behind at the abbey and walk to the north end of the island.

Achaban House was just a dream. The location is amazing, in our case the view from our room as well. But most of all, did we enjoy the relaxed and easy-going atmosphere of Achaban House as well as the help-yourself kitchen. Only wish we could have stayed a bit longer.

We had an absolutely wonderful stay. Kudos to owners Matt and Rachel for creating such a beautiful, inviting environment. The rooms are spacious and clean, the bathrooms are lovely and the large guest kitchen is a real bonus for travelers. We enjoyed the new paved path into town. This is a very special place and we would love to return! Although Mull is a bit off the beaten path, I can honestly say this was one of the true highlights of our trip to Scotland. We were 3 generations traveling together and everyone loved it!

Tips:

I highly recommend taking the ferry to Iona. Also, we visited the Ardalanish weavers (on Mull) which was very interesting. You can see the weavers in action and see the whole process of how they make and dye their wool and create beautiful textiles.

We very much enjoyed the calmness of the house, the songs of the birds and the wind and the rain (they are well equipped to dry quickly wet clothes!). We enjoyed walking in the wild nearby, with the sheeps, highland cows and birds everywhere. Would love to return some day!

Interesting pub just a mile from the house. Nice new path to walk to town. Limited products in Fionnphort grocery, but access to more interesting products in Iona, 10 minutes by ferry.

The B&B is a fifteen minute walk/3/4 mile into town along the (quiet) main road. A paved bikeway is almost completed to the town and beyond Achaban, that should make the walk even more pleasant. Rachel and Andy were delightful hosts. The breakfasts aren't hot, but there's plenty of coffee, fresh breads, cheddar, yogurt, bananas, granola and cereals. They put a fire on in the fireplace to cut the spring chill, and other guests played scrabble; the living room space is very comfortable. Parking on site.

Tips:

There is a fancy restaurant nearby that people book six months in advance and drive two hours each way (at least) to access. Otherwise, it's the pub/restaurant in town, with seatings 6 - 8, and little else. We had to wait 1 1/2 h to get a table, not realizing that if you stop by when the pub opens at 5, they'll take reservations starting at 6! It took us 3 nights to realize this, and few stay that long. Take the boat to Staffa. Take a hike on Iona. Visit Ardalanish Weavers. The best hiking is not here, but in eastern and north Mull.

This was our second stay at Achaban house for our now it seems annual trip to Iona! We really enjoyed our stay with Matt and Rachel again and felt very welcome. I really like the set up of private rooms and shared kitchen to allow mingling with other travellers for a good yarn but also the ability to nip back up to your room if you want to private space. Achaban house is child friendly, clean, tidy and very well run. It is a 15 minute walk to the Iona ferry which my young daughter aways enjoys, especially if we get to see highland cows along the road. Matt and Rachel, thanks for being such fantastic hosts! Davie and myself had an amazing couple of days on Mull and I think your B&B is up there with the best! Just keep doing what you're doing, absolutely spot on! I will definitely be returning to see more of Mull in the future and I know where I'll be staying too! Achaban House!

Tips:

The location is handy for Fionnphort and boat trips to Iona, Staffa and the Treshinish Isles. The Keel row in Fionnphort served great food in it's restaurant!

Helpful and informative, comfortable stay, access to large kitchen, dining room and lounge areas. onsite parking. Beautiful view from bedroom window across to loch. Helpful website for local attractions

Tips:

Approximate 11/2+ hour drive, single track road with passing places from Criagnure to accommodation. Good road surface and little traffic (September). Beautiful side of the Isle of Mull to stay on. From accommodation 30 min drive to start of 'scenic route' to Salen - beautiful scenery on 'route'. Limited restaurants, book in advance for table in Fionnphort. Good alternative to eat on Iona late afternoon and get last ferry back (check ferry times). Good kitchen facility with fridge access in Achaban House for self catering. Small local supermarket facilities. Pass mussel farm with honesty box. on drive from Craignure ferry to accommodation. Visiting both Iona and Staffa is possible to complete in a day. However if wanting to spend time walking on Iona and visit the Abbey better to spend the day there. if hiking ensure appropriate outdoor wear/footwear. The land can be very boggy after rain.

3rd September 2018:

Such a beautiful house, simply but tastefully decorated with nice touches of Harris Tweed, and our room was very well appointed with a gorgeous view over Loch Pottie from the huge bay window. We enjoyed the informal breakfast with good coffee and gorgeous home-made bread in the communal kitchen dining space. Matt, Rachel and Margaret were extremely welcoming and very helpful with a lot of knowledge of the local area. There is a large collection of maps and guides and I pored over a large OS map of the local area on one of the huge tables in the living room. We took Matt's advice on directions to Tobermory and saw otters at play at the shore almost exactly where he said we might see them. Awesome. Would definitely recommend and we are very likely to stay at Achaban again.

Tips:

An easy 15 minute walk to the Fionnphort jetty – watch out for the sheep and highland cows! Highly recommend a trip to Staffa and Iona with Staffa Trips. Ate at The Creel Row both nights. There is a shop but check the opening times – it has the only cash machine so once it's closed you won't have access to an ATM.

Matt, Rachel and Margaret were great hosts. Nothing was too much trouble. They were friendly, informative and knowledgeable. The accommodation is exceptionally well maintained, clean and works really well in terms of flexibility and it was nice to meet and chat to other residents. We stayed for a week and took the opportunity to cook a breakfast and an evening meal for ourselves and often wandered in to make a coffee. The location is perfect for exploring the whole island and very handy for Iona and Staffa. We really liked that they are creating a wildflower meadow and encouraging wildflowers across the property.

Tips:

Stay more than a couple of days on Mull and give yourself the opportunity to explore the island, there are gems around every corner!

Matt and Rachel were the perfect hosts. Achaban House is a stunning property, beautifully appointed and we didn't want for anything. The quiet position and beautiful view out over the Loch, and only a short stroll to town, made for the perfect place to stay. We only wish we had more time there. We only stayed 2 nights, but felt we had been there for a week, and a big part of that was Matt and Rachel's hospitality and their stunning property. We would highly recommend Achaban House as the perfect place to stay on Mull and experienbce the stunning beaches, and with easy and convenient access to beautiful Iona.

Tips:

Check out the stunning coastline and islands, and beautiful beaches. Definitely worth the walks to the more remote beaches. And worth getting across to Iona on the early ferry to beat the tourist buses coming on to Mull for the day to visit Iona.

My daughter and i had a lovely stay at Achaban house. The guest kitchen/ensuite rooms set up was the perfect set up for us. It was really fun to chat to other travellers whilst making dinner and retreat to the privacy of your room when we wanted. Rooms were really clean. I've stayed in a lot of guest houses and i think this is the cleanest i've seen! They were stylish but basic again perfect. Owners were always on hand but also maintained respectful distance. It is obvious they work really hard to create this balance and this was reflected in the peaceful, friendly atmosphere of the guest house. I wouldn't hesitate to come back and recommend to anyone staying on Mull.

Tips:

For small children there are plenty of beaches on Mull and Iona. My 4yr old really enjoyed our daily ferry ride to Iona which was really novel.

From the very first contact with Matt & Rachael I felt that we had made the right choice. The location is fabulous but their relaxed and more modern approach to a B&B is great. The room was spacious and clean and the fact that you can make your own tea and food if you want in the kitchen is an added bonus. We didn't use the sitting room as the weather was too nice to be indoors but it a very welcoming space. Matt was extremely helpful, from suggesting spots to launch my boat to contacting me when I forgot some stuff after leaving. He even delivered some of my wife's clothes that she also left to the next B&B we were staying - above and beyond! We highly recommend Achaban House and will definitely be returning.

we had not booked a place to stay for the night and arrived at 930pm. I believe we took Rachel's last opening. Tips:

visit Iona as early as you can in the morning. take a walk to the north and south of the island. south will take you a couple of hours but the views are breath taking and it is so peaceful. See the Abbey last when all the buses have left. If you are trying to get off the isle that same day, make sure you book a spot on the ferry. Ferries are very busy. we did get off Mull but only after waiting for the 3rd ferry and last of the evening Book before you go in advance.

They offer a breakfast with delicious homemade bread. We could not recommend this place enough. We will certainly be staying again next time we are in the area.

Tips:

Fionnphort is very close - about a 20 minute walk or 2 minute drive - and offers many shops and restaurants. We had good experiences at the Keel Row, the Ninth Wave, and the Fionnphort craft/gift shop (near the free park). If you are visiting Iona, the free park is up the hill to the left, just before you reach the pay park - definitely worth finding so you don't worry about parking. The owners are a lovely couple, very keen and helpful. The location is ideal: close to the ferry to Iona but also not far from some amazing white sandy beaches. The room was very comfy and they also provide a good breakfast which it is very much appreciated bear in mind there are not too many groceries shops in the island.

Tips:

Must visit Isle of Iona and Staffa but also it is worthy the coastline around Fidden and Knockvologan.

A haven of tranquility a stone's throw from Iona. We received the warmest of welcomes on arrival and loved every minute of our stay. It's a truly wonderful place to stay. The owners were brilliant and made us feel so welcome. Thank you again.

Tips:

The owners were a great source of suggestions of how and where to see wildlife. Mull itself did not disappoint. The island is stunning. We saw otter, hen harrier, golden and white tail eagles ... and that was just one afternoon! A lovely base to explore Mull and Iona, 15 mins walk from the Iona Ferry (or a very short drive). The rooms are very comfortable, clean and spacious, and there's a nice sitting room with a wood fire. The kitchen is clean and has plenty of space and cooking equipment. Homemade bread and cereals are provided for breakfast. The hosts are friendly and helpful.

Tips:

The ferry to Iona is 15 mins walk away. There are also lots of good walks and nice beaches on Mull, though it's handy to have a car to get to some of them. There's a pub which serves meals in nearby Fionnphort, or you can buy groceries at the shop there.

18th May 2017:

One of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in! Room was spotlessly clean. Matt was amazing, answering all my questions. This may sound like a cliche, but I honestly felt like I was in a home away from home! Breakfast was plentiful, with some of the nicest bread I've had in ages!

Tips:

Achaban is just under a mile from Fionnphort, so not a problem to walk, even with bags. There's a nice pub that does food. I only had a couple of drinks so can't comment on the food itself, but the staff were really friendly. There's also a small convenience store where basic groceries can be bought.
